My eyes widen with anticipation as I enter both the candy aisle at the grocery market and the horror section at the video store. Candy and the macabre are obsessions rooted in my childhood. Although they are desirable, they can also be sickening. These quirky aspects of my personality join together as I make my humorous utilitarian pottery. Porcelain allows a clean, pure surface to coat sickly sweet candy-like glazes over thrown and slip cast forms. Out-of-the-ordinary and vulgar elements on the surface of forms entice my interest. Unsavory motifs such as decaying teeth, pigs and chicken feet, brains and meat depictions take the user by surprise. Playing on the incongruities of form and surface decoration, I bring an element of attraction and repulsion to my utilitarian work. My aim is to reveal a playful sense of humor with a penchant for the bizarre.
